Video: Protester glued to Ironworkers Bridge roadway removed by Vancouver police

Organizers say the protester was "ripped off the road without the use of any solvents or treatment."
Save Old Growth protesters block the westbound lanes of Highway 1 on the Ironworkers Memorial Bridge Monday, April 25, 2022.

Protesters with the group Save Old Growth blocked traffic westbound on Highway 1 on the Ironworkers Memorial Bridge connecting Vancouver and North Vancouver during this morning's rush hour commute.

The "significant traffic disruption due to civil action" saw portions of the highway closed Monday (April 25) morning, according to DriveBC.

As of just ahead of 8 a.m. all lanes were cleared, however, drivers could "expect delays due to congestion," added DriveBC.

Save Old Growth reported one arrest among their ranks Monday morning.

The participant had glued themselves to the road and was removed by Vancouver Police Department officers, according to the group: "Supporters sat down on the highway and blocked traffic. One person glued their hand to the road, but was ripped off the road without the use of any solvents or treatment and subsequently arrested."

V.I.A. has reached out to the VPD for comment and is awaiting response.

As part of the group's ongoing traffic-blocking campaign to draw attention to the issue of old-growth logging in British Columbia, Save Old Growth has targeted busy highways and bridges in Metro Vancouver and Victoria since January.

Save Old Growth's highway blockades have focused on the Trans-Canada Highway (Hwy 1) and have resulted in not only several hours of major traffic delays during high-volume commuting hours but also numerous arrests of participating activists.

Some protests have led to violent confrontations involving motorists, protesters, and police.

Save Old Growth says it will operate its "civil resistance campaign, disrupting the Trans-Canada Highway multiple times per week until [the B.C. government passes] legislative change to immediately end all old-growth logging."
