Rain continues to drench Vancouver.

Environment Canada is warning Vancouverites about the rain.

While locals may be used to the rain, the federal agency has issued an alert as heavy rain is expected to fall, potentially for extended periods. The forecast is for between 60 and 120 mm to fall between this evening and Friday.

The warning extends across the south coast and southern Vancouver Island with the hardest hit areas expected to be the North Shore mountains, Howe Sound and West Vancouver Island. The warning also specifically mentions Coquitlam and Maple Ridge.

"A moist frontal system will approach the B.C. south coast this evening then stall through Friday, giving an extended period of rainfall," states Environment Canada, noting it is expected to ease late Friday.

With the downpour comes a warning about areas prone to flood or standing water.

"Heavy downpours can cause flash floods and water pooling on roads. If visibility is reduced while driving, turn on your lights and maintain a safe following distance," states the warning. "Localized flooding in low-lying areas is possible. Watch for possible washouts near rivers, creeks, and culverts."

Rainfall had been expected for most of the week, despite the drier weather the past couple of days.
