Burnaby RCMP are investigating a “threat” made to members of a local post-secondary school community, according to a letter sent to students that has been provided to the NOW.

Students attending the Burnaby campus of BCIT on Willingdon Avenue received an email from the school’s security team about the threat. Glen Magel, director of Safety, Security and Emergency Management at BCIT, said in the message to students that the threat had been emailed on Wednesday afternoon, but didn’t provide more details about the threat.

“Yesterday afternoon, several members of the BCIT community received an email regarding a threat to the institute,” Magel said in the message to students. “BCIT has referred this email to the RCMP and an investigation is underway. RCMP advised that this particular incident is not deemed credible.”

Magel reassured students that the school is safe.

“The BCIT Safety, Security, and Emergency Management team is confident in the ongoing safety of our BCIT campuses,” he said. “Due to the ongoing police investigation, we are unable to release further information, but wish to reassure our community that our response was thorough, and we have activated increased security procedures as a precaution.”

If students have concerns about safety or security on BCIT campuses, they are asked to contact the Safety, Security, and Emergency Management at 604-451-6856.
