The half-million dollar lottery ticket bought in Richmond last week belongs to a man from Coquitlam.
Kuljeet Singh Dhaliwal bought the ticket for Friday’s $70 million Lotto Max draw at Richmond’s Shoppers Drug Mart at Cambie and No. 5 roads.
Initially, Dhaliwal wasn’t too surprised when he checked his dad’s lottery ticket and it wasn’t a winner, but he was shocked when he checked his own ticket and it turned out to be a $500,000 winner.
He won after matching all seven numbers in one of the Maxmillion prizes during the Jan. 3 draw.
The Coquitlam resident split the $1 million Maxmillion prize with a winner in Ontario, who had the same winning numbers.
“I was telling my dad someone in B.C. had won the Maxmillion,” said Dhaliwal.
“He asked me to help him check his ticket, so I scanned it, but he didn’t win. My dad then reminded me to check my ticket — I pulled it out, scanned it, and couldn’t believe my eyes.”
Dhaliwal recalled his dad won $250 a few months ago and had been retelling the story ever since. “This is the now biggest win in the family ever and we’ll be telling this story for a while.”
As for how he plans to celebrate, Dhaliwal said “This is an incredible way to start the New Year. We are already thinking of a family trip to the Galapagos Islands.”
While Dhaliwal claimed one of the Maxmillion prizes, Canada’s largest-ever single prize is still up for grabs as the Lotto Max jackpot remains at $70 million for the Tuesday, Jan. 7 draw.
