Richmond’s Olympic bronze medalist, Evan Dunfee, is getting to set to take on a whole new, and rather unusual, challenge – racing against his brother.
Race walker Dunfee, who’s just went back into training after his heroics in Tokyo last month, is lining up in the Scotiabank Toronto Waterfront Marathon 10K race on Oct. 17 against his brother, Adam.
This will be the first time the brothers have competed since 2017, reigniting a sibling rivalry that goes back to when a 10-year-old Evan watched his older brother win a medal in his first race walking competition at age 13.
That experience inspired Evan, now 30, to take up the sport and he also went on to win debut race.
“We’ve always wanted to race each other,” Evan said.
“This seemed like a fantastic opportunity where I think we’re pretty evenly matched, so it makes it kind of fun and adds an element that people can relate to.”
Adam, who works as a sports broadcaster, commentated at the recent Harry Jerome Track Classic when Evan set the 10,000m Canadian national record at the race walk event with a time of 38 minutes 39.72 seconds.
Evan is slated to race walk the 10K course in Toronto while Adam runs.
“I think my biggest concern is just making the event fun, and providing that value back to the event,” said Dunfee.
“I’m a little bit concerned about how my body’s going to be fit enough in four weeks to race 10km…but I’m confident that my body knows how to do that.”
