Multiple fires have started due to portable heaters overheating, according to a Canadian safety alert.

Thousands of portable heaters sold across Canada are being recalled after several incidents of overheating, including three that caught fire.

Health Canada has issued an alert stating certain heaters sold under the Mastercraft, Profusion Heat, Prestige, and Matrix brands could be unsafe and lead to burns or property damage.

Specifically, 4800W 240V Portable Garage Heaters sold under those brands are being recalled with model numbers HA22-48M and HA22-48M1. They're either blue (Mastercraft) or red (the other brands).

"The recalled products have Intertek (ETL) certification file number 3153457," states the alert, noting the heaters were sold between July 2014 and April 2019.

As of Aug. 17, there have been 10 reports of heaters overheating, with three that resulted in fires that damaged property.

"Consumers should immediately stop using the recalled product and return it to the place of purchase for store credit or to obtain a replacement unit. Proof of purchase is not required," states the alert.

An estimated 68,000 heaters were sold in Canada at Canadian Tires across the country.
