Special weather statement cautions heavy rains headed into Metro Vancouver tonight

Don't be fooled by Monday's sunshine and balmy temps: Later tonight Metro Vancouver is due to get some serious rainfall that will carry over into Tuesday.

Environment Canada has issued a special weather statement for the region cautioning a frontal system over B.C.'s north and central coast is travelling southward. The system is expected to land on the west side of Vancouver Island Monday afternoon and arrive at the Lower Mainland Monday night. 

Over the south coast, the frontal system will become entrenched overnight and through Tuesday afternoon. During that time, rainfall amounts of 50 to 75 mm could occur over most of Metro Vancouver, the Fraser Valley, and Howe Sound, according to Canada's weather agency.

The special weather statement applies to the following locations: 

  • Metro Vancouver - central including the City of Vancouver Burnaby and New Westminster
  • Metro Vancouver - North Shore including West Vancouver and North Vancouver
  • Metro Vancouver - northeast including Coquitlam and Maple Ridge
  • Metro Vancouver - southeast including Surrey and Langley

Until the rain arrives Monday night, Vancouver's weather today is forecast to be sunny with a high of 14C. Tonight's low is 9C and tomorrow's high 12C. Tuesday night is forecast to be windy near the water, with the temp holding at 12C.
