11 drivers nailed going over twice the speed limit in Burnaby playground zones

Sure, Father’s Day feels like a bit of a Hallmark holiday, but it still feels good to celebrate great parents.

On Sunday, June 21 the Burnaby RCMP’s traffic enforcement unit stung a bunch of reckless speeders.

The officers targeted playground zones to catch speeding drivers ignoring the 30 km/h rules.

A total of 20 tickets were handed out and a whopping 11 drivers were caught doing more than double the speed limit.

While double the 30 km/h limit might not seem like a lot, it can be if a child suddenly steps into the road and a driver is not paying attention.

If that happens, going more than double the speed limit will make it nearly impossible to stop in time.

That’s why the speed limit is low around playgrounds and schools.

In 2019, the RCMP’s traffic enforcement unit staged a blitz on school and playground zones. In just three hours of enforcement on that day, police nailed 45 reckless drivers.

Five speeding tickets were handed out in the area around Capitol Hill Elementary.

A whopping 40 tickets were handed out at a playground zone on Springer Avenue at Beecher Park.

That stretch of Springer is downhill and people use it as a "ratrunner" route between Lougheed Highway and Parker Street or Hastings.
