Surrey's Vaisakhi Khalsa Day Parade cancelled

The COVID-19 pandemic is raising safety concerns for the event which draws hundreds of thousands of people

Surrey's massive Vaisakhi Khalsa Day Parade has once again been cancelled.

The annual event attracted around 500,000 people the last time it was held in 2019. Due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic organizers have decided to cancel it for the second year in a row.

"It is clear that there is no path for an event the size and magnitude of our parade to occur safely within the next three months,” says Gurdwara Sahib Dasmesh Darbar President Moninder Singh in a press release.

The parade had been planned for April 24; it celebrates the creation the Khalsa. He goes on to suggest people celebrate at home.

“We will celebrate this important date in the Sikh calendar within our family groups and with special broadcast programming but will look to gather again as a community for the traditional Surrey Vaisakhi Khalsa Day Parade in 2022," Singh says.

Gurdwara Sahib Dasmesh Darbar's event is the largest of its kind in the world, the organization says.
