People travelling between East Vancouver and the downtown core may get stuck in traffic over the next couple of weeks.
Work is being done on East Hastings Street between Dec. 16, 2024, and Jan 12, 2025, according to the City of Vancouver. Specifically, the Hastings Viaduct, between Glen Drive and Campbell Avenue, is being rehabilitated. The viaduct passes over the CN rail line.
The city is warning drivers that delays are expected in Strathcona and the Downtown Eastside as some lanes on East Hastings Street will be blocked.
"Lane reductions are required to ensure safe construction on the Hastings Viaduct while accommodating an adjacent affordable housing development project that is midstream," reads a press release.
The work on the viaduct that will affect traffic will take place over two phases.
From Dec. 16 to 22, traffic on East Hastings will be reduced to two eastbound lanes and one westbound lane.
From Jan. 6 to 12, traffic will again be reduced to two eastbound lanes and one westbound lane.
The City says it is working closely with Coast Mountain Bus Company and TransLink to manage impacts on bus services during these work times.
Drivers will be notified of key traffic changes via on-site electronic signage and traffic advisories on the City’s X account as work progresses.
The City of Vancouver also offers the following traffic tips:
- Plan ahead and expect delays.
- Open your map app, follow #VanTraffic or use traffic cameras to check traffic conditions along your route.
- Follow all traffic signage and abide by “No Parking” signs.
- Learn more about road closures across the city.
- Visit translink.ca/alerts for changes or disruptions to your bus service.
The work on the viaduct needs to be done by early 2025 or funding the city will receive for the project falls through.
