Van driver charged from serious Port Coquitlam hit-and-run in July 2021

William Douglas Weisner of Port Moody is due back in court next month.

A 50-year-old man has been charged following a serious Port Coquitlam hit-and-run that sent a motorcyclist to hospital nine months ago.

William Douglas Weisner is due back in court next month after BC Crown Counsel officially approved two charges for the Port Moody resident last Wednesday (April 20):

  • Failure to stop at the scene of an accident resulting in bodily harm
  • Operating a conveyance in a manner dangerous to the public

Spokesperson Cpl. Paige Kuz explains Coquitlam RCMP received multiple tips after the detachment released photos of the van.

"This investigation is an excellent example of the community stepping up and doing the right thing," she said.

Officers also reviewed dash-cam footage, obtained search warrants and conducted vehicle examinations as part of the case.

"The public support we received during this investigation was crucial in identifying the suspect."

The incident took place around 8:20 p.m. on July 28, 2021, when RCMP were called to the intersection of Westminister Avenue and Oxford Street — one block north of Lougheed Highway.

The driver of a dark-coloured GMC van took off eastbound on Prairie Avenue after colliding with a motorcycle.

Its operator was sent to hospital after they were tended to by first responders and Mounties said, at the time, they were expected to make a full recovery.

Weisner is set to return to Port Coquitlam Provincial Court on May 18 at 9 a.m.

According to B.C. court services, he was issued a violation ticket for failing to wear a seatbelt while driving in Coquitlam in 1998.
