Vancouver resident Joyce Preston won $1M from a lotto scratcher.

Scratch-and-win tickets are pretty common stocking stuffers and gag gifts so if you have any lying around you might want to double check you've scratched them all.

Vancouver resident Joyce Preston rang in the new year with a $1 million lottery win from a $10 scratcher.

“I was at home and scratched this ticket as the last in a bunch,” she recalls. “I looked at the matching number and it said $1 million!”

She says she was "in shock and disbelief" at first but it started to become more real after she told her family. Her daughter was the first person she shared the news with who apparently screamed and exclaimed “Oh my god, a million!”

Preston is planning on putting the money toward a vacation with her friends and hopes to help her grandchildren with their education. She bought the ticket from the Shell Select station on Oak Street and King Edward Avenue in Vancouver.

BCLC reports that Scratch & Win players redeemed more than $177 million in prize-winning tickets last year.
