Vancouver Fire Rescue Services says a fire in East Vancouver on 12th Avenue between Clark Drive and Glen Drive is not suspicious.

Vancouver firefighters knocked down a residential fire late Thursday (March 30) morning in East Vancouver.

A fire broke out in the basement unit of a residence in the 1200 block of 12th Avenue between Clark Drive and Glen Drive around 11 a.m. on Thursday, Vancouver Fire Rescue Services (VFRS) Chief of Operations Jarret Gray told V.I.A.

Six fire trucks and 24 firefighters were dispatched to the scene of the working fire. The fire crew found the tenant outside of his suite and were able to knock the fire "down quickly," Gray said.

While there were no injuries, the basement is uninhabitable due to damages; the power and gas to the house also had to be shut off.

A section of 12th Avenue was closed to traffic for approximately 45 minutes but has since opened up.

The cause of the fire is under investigation but the VFRS have determined that it was an "accidental fire" and they did not find evidence of anything "suspicious" in the unit, Gray added.

The VFRS reminds the public to keep batteries in their smoke alarms.
