The duck pond at Jericho Beach Park, voted one of the best freshwater ponds in Vancouver by locals, has patches of oil and overgrown algae floating on top of the water according to a concerned local.

One of Vancouver's best freshwater ponds isn't so fresh.

The pond at Jericho Beach Park is home to many native bird and amphibian species. On May 26, one Vancouver local noticed an odd residue floating on top of the pond water.

"Smells of oil near [the] bridge and there are big patches of oil," says Elvira Lount on Twitter, noting that the pond is also covered in algae. "No ducks to be seen."

The resident adds that she reported the unsettling state of the pond to the City via email and Van311.

The Vancouver Board of Parks and Recreation tells V.I.A. that they are "aware of an oily residue at Jericho Pond and are currently working with the City’s Environmental Services team on water quality testing," adding that they will share results once they are available.

"It’s worth noting that oily residues can occur for a number of reasons, including natural organic material decay," the Park Board notes.

V.I.A. has also reached out to the Jericho Stewardship Group for a comment.
