William Lane had to rescan his tickets several times just to be sure he had read the number correctly.
"I was at the Esso/7-Eleven on Victoria and Kingsway and saw that the ticket scanner read ‘You’re a winner $1,000,000,'" he recalls.
The Vancouver resident initially walked away but then went back again just to make sure.
“I think it will take a while to sink in. It’s hard to believe,” he says.
The first person he told was his wife who was on a group rock-climbing trip in Whistler at the time. He "told her to be calm about it until she came home."
Lane purchased his winning Maxmillions prize ticket from the Husky gas station on South Grandview Highway and found out he won on September 30. For now, he and his wife are taking some time to plan ahead but they say that they're both looking forward to travelling more.
