'High risk driving': Motorcyclist caught going 85 km/h over speed limit on Vancouver street

The driver got a $483 fine on the side of the road.

Vancouver police had to be quick this weekend to catch a speeding motorcycle.

Police recorded the motorcycle, which appears to be a BMW S 1000 RR sportbike (running about $32,000), travelling at 136 km/h down Granville Street.

"136 km/h in a 50 zone is also classified as High-Risk Driving," reads a post on Twitter/X from the Vancouver Police Department's traffic section.

The bike was stopped on the 7100 block of Granville, near St. Stephen's United Church.

The driver earned a $483 fine for the incident (excessive speed was the only offence recorded), and the bike was immediately impounded and trucked from the side of the road.

The VPD recently handed out a similar ticket to the driver of a $450,000 Porsche.

In addition to the fine, the owner of the vehicle also has to pay fees to get the vehicle out of the impoundment lot, which can add up to several hundred dollars depending on several factors (like how heavy it is and how far it was towed).

In response to the post about the BMW motorcycle on social media, some people asked why a higher fine was not issued.

In response, the police pointed out they don't set the fines, only enforce them.

The $483 fine is the highest police can issue to drivers of speeding passenger vehicles on the side of the road for a single offence, according to ICBC's website. Ticket fines are set by the provincial government.
