Delta police say it’s too early to say who torched the playground at Beach Grove Elementary school Saturday night, burning the structure to the ground.

DPD along with Delta fire were called to the scene just before 11 p.m.

Deputy Chief Brad Wilson said firefighters extinguished the fire and tapped off the area for DPD to investigate.

Social media was abuzz on Sunday as news of the fire spread quickly on a community Facebook page with many saying teens were responsible for setting the fire.

“We are early in the investigation and we can’t say who is responsible,” said DPD public affairs coordinator Cris Leykauf.

Delta school district communications manager Cathryn Tucker said the school district encourages anyone that may have information about the fire to call Delta police.

“Students across our district take great joy in being able to play in our playgrounds, so we are extremely saddened to see one of them damaged by such senseless and dangerous vandalism,” said Tucker. “The fire caused extensive damage to the plastic portions of the play structure and we anticipate the cost of rebuilding it will be significant. We will be working with our insurance company over the coming days and weeks so that we can start the process to rebuild the play structure as soon as possible.”

Vandalism at the school site also targeted the Beach Grove playground back in 2011, burning portions of the play structure.
