Video: First responders honour Const. Shaelyn Yang as body passes through Richmond

A man has been charged with first-degree murder in connection with the Burnaby RCMP's death.

RCMP officers, firefighters and paramedics were lined along Cambie Road near No. 4 Road Friday afternoon as Const. Shaelyn Yang’s body passed by.

The procession had come from Burnaby via Surrey and would end in Richmond which was her hometown.

Yang, 31, was stabbed Tuesday in a homeless camp in Burnaby, where she worked as a police officer, and subsequently died of her injuries.

Yang was attending a campsite with a Burnaby bylaw officer in Broadview Park near Canada Way.

The suspect was sent to hospital with gunshot wounds but is expected to survive.

Charges were laid in Vancouver provincial court on Wednesday against Jongwon Ham.

Murder is automatically first degree when the victim is a police officer, under the Criminal Code of Canada.

Both the Integrated Homicide Investigation Team (IHIT) and the Independent Investigations Office are investigating the incident.

A GoFundMe page has been set up to raise money for her family.

Yang is survived by a spouse and extended family.
