A vigil is planned for victims of the Turkey-Syria earthquake at the Vancouver Art Gallery on March 5, 2023.

Vancouver's Turkish community and supporters are holding a vigil this weekend.

Two major earthquakes and hundreds of aftershocks shook the Turkey-Syria region on Feb. 6, damaging tens of thousands of buildings and leaving more than 47,000 people dead.

The magnitude 7.8 quake caused around 173,000 buildings, containing around 534,000 apartments or other units, to collapse or suffer severe damage.

In support of those impacted by the events and to recognize a month since the earthquake hit, Vancouver's Turkish-Canadian Society is organizing a candlelight vigil on Sunday (March 5) in Downtown Vancouver.

The vigil will take place at the šxʷƛ̓ənəq Xwtl'e7énḵ Square (formerly known as the North Plaza) at the Vancouver Art Gallery shortly after 5 p.m.

The society invites locals to join with flowers and candles to remember those lost in the earthquake.
