The Canadian Society for Humane Science hosts World Day for Animals in Laboratories along with speakers and “Quarantini” making.

During today’s happy hour a Vancouver-based society is hosting a virtual event to mark World Day for Animals in Laboratories.

The Canadian Society for Humane Science (SHS) was officially registered as a non-profit society in 2015 to lend a critical eye to the use of animals in teaching, research, and testing in Canada. Today the society is putting on a virtual event where participants will hear from several expert speakers and learn how to make a “Quarantini” cocktail from renowned Vancouver mixologist Alex Black.

Ruchi Sharma, a PhD candidate at the Willerth Lab at the University of Victoria is one of the experts scheduled to speak. At the lab, she is using 3D bioprinting to create human neural tissue for Parkinson’s Disease research.

Dr. Sarah Hedtrich, a global leader in human skin and lung diseases, uses non-animal methods for her research at the University of British Columbia. During her presentation, she’ll explain why animal models are not suitable for her research and about the non-animal methods she uses.

As for the cocktail mixing, all you’ll need is some London dry style gin, fresh lime juice, bitters, some fruity herbal tea, sugar, ice and something to shake it all up in.
