Watch: Crews remove debris from Crab Park as part of planned cleanup

Police vehicles and City of Vancouver trucks were seen surrounding the park on Wednesday morning.

City of Vancouver staff were out at Crab Park Wednesday morning cleaning up debris.

The park is home to an encampment of people experiencing homelessness.

A handful of City of Vancouver vehicles and Vancouver police cruisers were parked nearby.

An unhoused man Glacier Media spoke to said crews were cleaning up left-behind tents from people who had moved on from Crab Park.

In an email to Glacier Media, the city confirmed it was a "scheduled" cleanup effort.

"Park rangers, in collaboration with city partners, people living in the encampment and advocates, are currently cleaning up debris within and around the daytime sheltering area,” said a spokesperson with the Vancouver Board of Parks and Recreation.

VPD was asked to “stand by in order to keep the peace,” according to Const. Tania Visintin.

"Aligning with staff safety operations procedures, police were requested to be near, but not in the park for the cleanup," the city spokesperson said.
