A portion of a playground in Pier Park is off-limits after a May 13 fire.

The fate of a play structure in Westminster Pier Park has yet to be determined after it went up in flames on Thursday morning.

New Westminster firefighters attended the waterfront park about 7:15 a.m. on May 13, after a receiving a call about a small fire.

“The fire was quickly extinguished and was contained to a small section of the children’s play equipment adjacent to the park concession stand,” said Dean Gibson, the city’s director of parks and recreation.

Gibson said members of the public who have information about the fire are encouraged to contact the New Westminster Fire and Rescue Services (604-519-1000) and/or the New Westminster parks and recreation department.

“It has not been determined if the affected play structure can be repaired or if it will require replacement,” he said in an email to the Record. “For now, the immediately impacted area is closed. The remainder of Westminster Pier Park remains open for public use.”

Westminster Pier Park reopened to the public on April 2, after being closed since September 2020, when a massive fire destroyed a portion of the park.

The Record has reached out to New Westminster Fire and Rescue Services for comment, but had not yet heard back at press time. More to come.
