Summer kicks into full swing with a wide range of events for folks of all ages this month. Here’s a sample of some of the events you’ll be able to enjoy in New West in July.
Friday, July 1 to Sunday, July 3
Canada Day features a four-day program that includes family-friendly activities, live music, children’s entertainment, markets and much more. The City of New Westminster is hosting activities in neighbourhoods across the city. You can read all about what’s being planned here.
Fraser River Discovery Centre is once again hosting its Summer Days Series on long weekend this summer, starting Friday, July 1.
Wednesday, July 6
Poetry in the Park returns to the Queen’s Park Bandshell from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. It’s running every Wednesday night from July 6 to Aug. 31.
Thursday, July 7
The Stonehaus Salmonbellies Open Haus, starting at 3 p.m., includes a free kids’ faceoff clinic run by Tyrell Hamer-Jackson (3 to 4:30 p.m.), a masters game between the local Coasters team and the Port Coquitlam Saints (5 to 6 p.m.). Music, face painting and games begin at 5 p.m. on the lawn in front of the arena; a barbeque begins at 6 p.m.; and the beer garden will open (as usual) at 6:30 p.m. The event also includes tours of Queen’s Park (offered every half hour starting at 4:30 p.m.) including a stop in the Salmonbellies’ dressing room, contests at intermission and a post-game autograph session. The team will also welcome back alumni and recognize previous general manager/president, Dan Richardson. At 7:30 p.m. the New Westminster Salmonbellies will take on the Coquitlam Adanacs.
Friday, July 8
Fridays on Front returns after a two-year COVID-related hiatus. Taking place in the 600 block of Front Street, this popular gathering spot features live entertainment, artisan vendors and food trucks. The event is licensed for this street social. Admission is free and all ages are welcome. (If you can’t make today’s event, Fridays on Front runs every Friday from July 8 to Aug. 19 from 5 to 9 p.m.)
Saturday, July 9
On Your Block Festival is a free multicultural festival that aims to engage the community through live performances, food, and art. It will also include a beer garden, more than 50 local vendors, and prize raffles. It’s happening from 1 to 9 p.m. at Tipperary Park , 315 Queens Ave.
Century House Summer Bazaar returns on Saturday, July 9 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Century House, 620 Eighth St. Crafts, quilting, pottery and art items created by the folks at Century House, as well as books, jewellery, tools electronics, plants and collectibles will be among the items for sale.
Saturday, July 9 and Sunday, July 10
Children's Arts Festival runs from noon to 5 p.m. both days at The Farm in Queen's Park. Kids can participate in a wide array of artistic fun. It’s part of the Queen’s Park Arts Festival that’s running from July 6 to 10.
Saturday, July 16
Uptown Live, a free summer street festival, will feature performances on three stages, an artisan market with more than 50 vendors, 30 food trucks, three licensed areas around the entertainment stages and interactive activities. It’s taking place in the uptown business district around Sixth and Sixth on Saturday, July 16 from noon to 9 p.m.
Saturday July 24
12th Street Festival of the Arts features live music, arts and crafts children’s activities like balloon twisters and face painters and more. It’s happening from 11:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. on 12th Street, between Sixth and Eighth avenues.
