TORONTO — Five things to watch for in the Canadian business world in the coming week:

Banking conference
Bank CEOs will speak at RBC Capital Markets 2021 Canadian Bank CEO conference on Monday. Several Canadian companies — including the country's top banks — said recently that they are planning to thank their staff for a year of hard work with year-end bonuses, with some even topping up the amount.

Corus results
Corus Entertainment Inc. will release its first-quarter results and hold a conference call on Tuesday. The media company reported in October that the pandemic had an uneven impact on different parts of its business during the fourth quarter, with television revenues showing glimmers of hope but steep losses in radio.

Economy lookahead
Former Bank of Canada governor Stephen Poloz will discuss Canada’s current economic climate, policy priorities and what it all might mean for Canada’s long-term prosperity on Wednesday. Chief economists from Canada’s big banks said on Jan. 7 that they expect the economy to rebound this year, but that failing to control COVID-19 or get vaccines into arms could upend that recovery.

Shaw results
Shaw Communications Inc. will be releasing its first-quarter results on Wednesday. Western Canada's largest cable company told analysts in October that it's hoping Shaw customers will bundle home internet services with its new wireless service, preventing rival Telus Corp. from making further gains in the market.

Cogeco update
Cogeco Inc. and Cogeco Communications Inc. will release Q1 results on Thursday. After fending off two hostile takeover attempts from Altice USA Inc. and Rogers Communications, CEO Phlippe Jette said in October that Cogeco has the financial resources to do more acquisitions and service improvements profitably as an independent company.
