YELLOWKNIFE — Three homes have been lost to a wildfire in a community in the Northwest Territories about 100 kilometres northwest of Yellowknife.

Northwest Territories Wildfire Information says the fire reached the community of Behchoko in Rae overnight.

They say spot fires are burning around Rae and warned residents to stay away even as the highway remains open.

The agency says firefighters were pulled back earlier for safety reasons as the wildfire posed a risk to their team.

The department says patrols began this morning to address spot fires and hot spots to prevent additional flareups in Rae.

It says Edzo, which is about nine kilometres from Behchoko, may get affected by the wildfire as they assess the risks.
