Ontario's police watchdog is investigating after a Peel Region police officer shot and seriously injured a man Wednesday morning, officials said.

Police said they were called to the area of Malta Avenue and Ray Lawson Boulevard in Brampton, Ont., just before 10 a.m.

The Special Investigations Unit said in a press release that the officers were responding to a reported family dispute at an apartment.

The agency said when officers arrived at the suite, there was "an interaction" and a 35-year-old man was shot by an officer. He was taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, the SIU said.

Peel Region police said no officers were injured in the shooting, and the incident was contained with no threat to the area.

The SIU, which responds when police have been involved in a death or injury, said three investigators and two forensic investigators have been assigned to the case.
