Bob Kronbauer: Denny's forgives local food thief

A heartwarming tale of redemption

Don't do the petty crime if you can't do the time

Some holiday cheer was delivered early this week as Denny's Canada reached out to a thief and let him know that they forgave him for the dine and dash he pulled on them 26 years ago.

That thief was me.

After we reported that the Denny's on Southwest Marine Drive will be permanently closing, I wrote a confessional about the shameful act I pulled at that location in 1996 - one that could be chalked up to peer pressure but which I owed an apology for regardless.

I donated $100 to the Greater Vancouver Food Bank on behalf of Denny's, then begged them for forgiveness.

And forgive they did - when I posted a video about it as an Instagram reel, the official Denny's Canada account commented on the video, thanking me for my "generous donation" then telling me that "We still love you," with a heart emoji.

It was enough to melt the heart of this hardened criminal, and has me craving a Grand Slam breakfast.

I'll be sure to bring cash this time.
