People following Parks Canada on social media might be scratching their heads as the public agency announced it would be teaching people how to camp on Parliament Hill today. World Environment Day.
To be clear, it doesn't seem that the government is looking to encourage or teach people to camp on the Hill; they're teaching them to camp, and that teaching is happening on the Hill.
The event is called Parks Canada Day on Parliament Hill and it's being billed as a day of family fun revolving around conservation. The environment minister Catherine McKenna is supposedly making an appearance.
Beyond teaching people how to camp, it's noteworthy that "In honor of this year’s World Environment Day theme of ‘beat plastic pollution’, we will have a brand new activity that will showcase the impacts of plastic pollution on our ocean and its marine life, and the small changes that we can make to help keep our oceans clean and healthy."
On this side of the country people who are concerned about the environment are already camped out. On Burnaby Mountain. In protest of the Trans Mountain pipeline expansion.
A supreme irony lies in the fact that over the summer we may see some of those very same people camped out on Parliament Hill as the protest over the pipeline project doesn't seem to be dying down.
