Join us for the final "Perspectives" talks this Sunday November 26th, the last in a series of five illustrated presentations sharing unique Vancouver histories.

In Perspectives: Talks & Discussion at the Vancouver Lookout, Harbour Centre, presented in partnership for The Vancouver Lookout's 40th Anniversary, VHF invites you to dig deeper into Vancouver's history and heritage while exploring an iconic Vancouver site.

South Asian history is an important part of the legacy of the city and we have previously celebrated two South Asian Places That Matter sites in Vancouver The First Sikh Temple (in Kitsilano) and Punjabi Market (Fraser and 49th Ave).We continue to engage in the histories of Vancouver's South Asian Community with the upcoming presentation by three speakers, Naveen Girn, Paneet Singh and Milan Singh, who are all co-founders of the South Asian Canadian History Association. Don't miss this dynamic trio who are respectively engaged with art, theatre, research and community throughout the Lower Mainland.

Cultural Landscapes: Vancouver’s South Asian Community

Sunday, November 26, 2017

11:00am- 12:30pm

Featuring Naveen Girn, Paneet Singh and Milan Singh

In one of the earliest South Asian Canadian novels, Sadhu Singh Dhami wrote that sometimes the landscape of Vancouver can evoke the idea of home because "the Fraser was much like the Sutlej gliding through the plains of the Punjab." This talk looks at how migrants over the past 100 years have worked to create belonging and thread their lives into the story of Vancouver. From the epic tale of the Komagata Maru to clandestine freedom movements, from the fight for civil rights to the living legacy of trauma and displacement, this talk will illuminate South Asian stories and intercultural relationships that can only happen in Vancouver.

Tickets are $17.50 and include access to the Lookout with plenty of time afterwards to explore and marvel at the 360 degree view, as well as complimentary hot beverages. Purchase HERE or at the venue on the day, 555 W Hastings St, The Vancouver Lookout, Harbour Centre.
