It starts with a closed road and turns into a day of connection. Thousands of conversations, shared meals and rediscovering the Heights is what Hats Off Day is all about. If you’ve never been, this is the year to experience it.

On Saturday, June 7, Hastings Street will once again shut down to traffic to turn into a full-on block party that brings everyone together to enjoy live music, delicious eats, local shops, kids’ activities, vintage cars and a small town atmosphere that’s hard to find in the big city.

Neighbours bringing the party

Hats Off Day is organized by the people who live and work in the area, small business owners and passionate volunteers who take pride in their community and really know how to throw a party. It’s a day to unite the community and put differences aside.

For those who are in the Heights often, it’s also the day when you see your barista dancing down the street, your hairstylist marching with their salon crew or your kid’s piano teacher passing out treats. For first-timers, it’s a chance to see what makes this part of Burnaby so special.

What to expect

Hats Off Day kicks off at 9:30 a.m. with the Family Fun Dash, a beloved tradition welcoming all ages, strollers and wheelchairs. Plus, participants get a special swag bag and a wooden laser-carved finisher’s medal.

At 10 a.m., the mainstreet-style parade hits Hastings with community groups, schools and marching bands. From 11 to 4, the street festival takes over with sidewalk sales, live entertainment, global eats and kids’ activities.

Throughout the day, Hastings Street becomes a pedestrians' paradise with nearly 2 kilometres of sidewalk sales, kids’ activities, live performances and a variety of local eateries and businesses. You’ll find everything from handmade crafts and unique gifts to boutique fashion. It’s the perfect place to support local small businesses while picking up something special.

This year’s Disco Fever theme promises plenty of throwbacks, big hair and groovy tunes, so make sure to bring your bell-bottoms and platform shoes. Costumes are encouraged.

Entertainment and activities

Don’t miss the popular Show & Shine car show, where up to 100 classic, vintage and custom vehicles line the street, bringing extra charm and nostalgia for all ages to enjoy.
