As the summer heats up, it’s time for all of you outdoor enthusiasts to lace up your running shoes and start preparing for an unforgettable challenge on Grouse Mountain.

On August 26, athletes, elite mountain runners, and novice hikers will gather to conquer the Grouse Grind Mountain Run. The return of this iconic event presents an opportunity to take all of your training from the season and put it to the test by pushing the limits of your physical endurance. It’s also a chance to help raise much needed funds for North Shore Rescue’s efforts to provide life-saving community-based search and rescue services to the public.

If you’ve never participated in the Grouse Grind Mountain Run before, here’s what to expect.

Located in North Vancouver, the Grouse Grind is a grueling trail known for its steep incline and rugged terrain. It spans 2.5 kilometres and features an elevation gain of 800 metres. Many consider it a Vancouver rite of passage, offering a true test of strength and determination. The Vancouver classic will be celebrating its 30th year in 2023, and hasn’t been held since 2019.

While the Grouse Grind is a challenging hike on any given day, the Mountain Run takes the intensity to a whole new level. Athletes sprint, jog, or power-walk their way up the mountain, aiming for their personal best times. It’s a race against both the clock and your own physical limits, and the atmosphere is electric with camaraderie and shared enthusiasm. Those looking to sprint up the mountain will be expected to set times of about 30 minutes or less for the women’s and men’s categories.

This year’s event carries even greater significance, as it presents an opportunity to continue supporting North Shore Rescue. The recent Multi-Grouse Grind Challenge saw an astounding success, raising over $25,0000 for this vital organization. North Shore Rescue is composed of dedicated volunteers who provide search and rescue services in the North Shore mountains. By participating in the Grouse Grind Mountain Run, you’ll not only challenge yourself but also contribute to the ongoing efforts of these selfless individuals.

Now, with just under a month until race day, there’s still time to train and prepare for the ultimate test of endurance. Whether you’re a seasoned trail runner or a beginner looking for a new adventure, setting aside dedicated training time will undoubtedly improve your performance. The Grouse Grind demands both physical and mental resilience, so consider incorporating a mix of cardiovascular exercises, strength training, and hill workouts into your regimen. Take advantage of local trails and nature reserves to stimulate the terrain and condition your body for the uphill battle that awaits.

Remember, it’s not just about finishing the race – it’s about achieving your personal best. Strive to surpass your previous records or challenge yourself to conquer the Grouse Grind for the first time. The sense of accomplishment and fulfillment you’ll experience at the finish line will be worth every drop of sweat shed during your training sessions. After the race, the Mountaintop Plaza will be buzzing with activity, including award presentations, a recovery zone, BBQ, DJ, and games.

Train hard, stay focused, and let your determination carry you to new heights. Together, we can make a difference in the lives of others while pushing ourselves to achieve greatness.
