Places, everyone, because Broadway is coming back to Vancouver!

The 2022 season of Broadway Across Canada (BAC) is fast approaching, and with that, we’re getting closer and closer to the highly-anticipated premiere of Hamilton on the Canadian West Coast!

From May 24 to June 19, 2022, BAC is hosting the North American tour production of Hamilton at Queen Elizabeth Theatre. The Hamilton “And Peggy” tour cast stars Julius Thomas II as Alexander Hamilton, Donald Webber, Jr. as Aaron Burr, Victoria Ann Scovens as Eliza Hamilton, and more.

Lin-Manuel Miranda’s internationally acclaimed Broadway musical about the legacy of American founding father Alexander Hamilton tells the story of America then as told by America now, featuring a score that blends hip-hop, jazz, R&B, and traditional Broadway musical styles.

With book, music, and lyrics by Miranda, direction by Thomas Kail, choreography by Andy Blankenbuehler, and musical supervision and orchestrations by Alex Lacamoire, Hamilton has sparked a revolutionary moment in theatre since its Broadway debut in 2015 and continues to have a rippling and profound impact on culture, politics, and education worldwide.

Here are five fun facts about what makes Hamilton the Broadway musical sensation it is today:

  • In Hamilton, the roles of America’s founding fathers and other historical figures are played by actors of colour — an intentional casting choice by the show’s creator.

  • According to fivethirtyeight, the fast-paced sung-and-rapped-through musical packs in 144 words per minute, with a total word count of 20,520, within its 2 hour and 40 minutes run time.

  • Hamilton currently holds the record for the most nominations ever received by a single production with 16 nominations (of which the show won 11 awards). The original Broadway production has also received multiple Olivier Awards, a Grammy, the Pulitzer Prize, and recognition at the Kennedy Center Honors.

  • The Hamilton Mixtape, which debuted at #1 on the Billboard 200 charts in 2016, contains a collection of remixes, covers, and samples of the musical's songs as performed by John Legend, Alicia Keys, Andra Day, Kelly Clarkson, Nas, The Roots, and more.

  • In 2016, Hamilton grossed over $3.3 million, making it the first Broadway show ever to bring in more than $3 million for eight performances. Hamilton tickets are notoriously difficult to come by and are constantly sold out several months in advance, which is what makes this chance to see the hit show in Vancouver so worthwhile!
