B.C. predictive health firm Molecular You raises $5M Series A

By analyzing blood samples, the company aims to identify health risks before diseases may develop.

A Vancouver-based company that analyzes blood samples to assess potential health risks has secured new capital to help scale its operations.

Molecular You announced Wednesday it has closed a $5-million Series A financing round, led by U.S.-based Voloridge Health, a data science-driven health technology firm.

Other investors in the round include Dynamic Leap, which focuses on investing in early-stage emerging technology companies.

“We plan to use this capital to grow our customer base across both consumer and clinical channels in North America and build our revenue,” said Jim Kean, CEO of Molecular You.

Founded in Vancouver in 2014, Molecular You uses blood samples to measure more than 250 biomarkers and analyze biological pathways to identify health risks.

Its platform provides a comprehensive snapshot of overall health across more than 25 areas and delivers personalized, data-driven lifestyle recommendations to help prevent potential disease, according to the company.

Kean said the new funding will also support expanding Molecular You’s analytical and predictive capabilities—the company plans to introduce a new version of its platform by year-end that can measure more than 800 biomarkers.

“Blood is a wonderful repository of information waiting to be unlocked,” he said.

“We take the blood, run it through our scientific instrumentation—the mass spectrometry—which produces biomarker measurements. From there, we can assess disease risk or identify biological pathways that may need support.”

The company said its approach views the body as a whole, which it considers “critical” for predictive and preventive medicine—particularly for complex conditions such as Alzheimer’s disease, polycystic ovary syndrome and autoimmune disorders that are linked to multiple biomarkers typically measured separately.

Molecular You launched its service in Canada seven years ago. Consumers can access it through partner networks such as Well Health Clinic Network or order it online—a medical professional will come to collect samples at home.

The company expanded to the U.S. last April, where its services are also available through partner clinics and online.

"Our vision is to become the leading predictive health company in the world," said Kean.

"If you can predict risk and conditions before disease develops, you can prevent a lot of human suffering, and you can save the system a lot of money."
