After announcing earlier this week that it was suspending hot food service in its cafeterias and switching to “grab-and-go” meals instead, BC Ferries said March 19 that it was ending all food service.

“In continued support of social distancing, BC Ferries is suspending all food services onboard our ships and at our terminals , with the exception of our northern routes, which will have limited offerings,” the ferry company said in a release.

“During the COVID-19 situation, customers have changed their food purchasing habits and are choosing not to buy our grab-and-go items at this time, leading to tremendous food waste.”

BC Ferries said its vending machines will still be available.

Ferries said to stop perishable items already in stock from going to waste some employees working the major routes at Swartz Bay came up with the idea of donating it to a local foodbank.

“The Rainbow Kitchen picked up more than 2,400 pounds of food from Swartz Bay,” Ferries said. “The food came from five ships and Lands End café. The items included things like mashed potatoes, coleslaw and fresh produce like cucumbers and onions.”
