Upwards of a foot of snow is expected to fall on the Coquihalla Friday.

Environment Canada issued a snowfall warning for Highway 5 between Hope and Merritt, calling for 20 to 30 cm by Saturday morning.

“An approaching low pressure system will give snow to the southern highway passes today. Snow will begin over the Coquihalla Summit near midday and then spread to Kootenay Pass this afternoon,” the alert says.

Highway 3 between Paulson Summit and Kootenay Pass should also receive 20 to 30 cm, while the Hope-Princeton corridor will get 15 to 20 cm.

“The snow is forecast to intensify tonight as the low nears,” the continues. “Visibility may be suddenly reduced at times in heavy snow. Rapidly accumulating snow will make travel difficult.”

Motorists should check Castanet or DriveBC for up to date on the region’s highways.
