According to a new report, Canada has one of the top five most powerful passports in the world -- but it shares the position with several other countries.

Empowered by Arton Capital, the Passport Index is a global mobility intelligence platform providing interactive travel requirements and the ability to compare, rank and improve passports based on their mobility scores.

The Montreal-based agency covers the state of Global Mobility and in the fourth quarter of 2022 highlights the biggest shifts in passport power around the world.

The United Arab Emirates continues to hold the title of the “World’s Most Powerful Passport” in 2022, boasting a score of 180. The Emirati passport grants widespread visa-free or visa-on-arrival access to a large swathe of the world.

Following the UAE, Germany, Sweden, Finland, Luxembourg, Spain, France, Italy, Netherlands, Austria, Switzerland, and South Korea follow in the second spot. These countries enjoy Visa-free entry to over 120 countries worldwide.

Denmark, Belgium, Portugal, Norway, Poland, Ireland, the United States of America, and New Zealand tied for third, while the Czech Republic, Greece, Hungary, Japan, the United Kingdom, and Australia came fourth.

Singapore, Malta, Slovakia, Lithuania, and Canada shared the fifth spot, with their respective travel documents granting them access to over 100 countries across the globe.

In an August report, Arton Capital noted that data collected for the World Openness Score (WOS) "finally suggested an end to the pandemic’s tiresome blockade on global freedom."

While visa-free travel returned to normal (or close to it) after two and a half years, the WOS surpassed its historic high on Aug. 7, breaking the record at 21,362 with a 54 per cent open world after the Marshall Islands lifted their COVID-19 travel bans.
