Steveston residents made an alarming discovery on Thanksgiving Monday on a patch of green space in the village.
Partially buried in two separate grass areas, close to Steveston Community Centre, were two, large animal traps, one of which was set and live.

According to one of the residents who found them, Jonard Janolino, there was a little bit of caution tape wrapped around the traps near Ewen Avenue, close to Moncton Street.
Janolino immediately called the RCMP, at around 2:30 p.m., before an officer managed to safely disarm it. Police seized both traps for investigation.
"We are actively investigating this incident,” said Richmond RCMP’s Cpl. Dennis Hwang.
“We are very concerned that these traps been left in an area where serious harm could result to animals, pets, and humans."

Janolino, meanwhile, lambasted on social media the person who planted the traps in an “area with high volume of foot traffic, kid traffic and pet traffic.”
“These traps were made for medium size animals, which means children would have been severely injured by these traps,” he added.
“There might be more traps, so keep an eye out.”
