Backyard 'stranger assault' did not happen, victim offers apology

A woman who reported being assaulted by a stranger who entered her private backyard and grabbed her from behind is now offering an apology to her community, as it turns out the encounter did not take place at all.

A woman who reported being assaulted by a stranger who entered her private backyard and grabbed her from behind is now offering an apology to her community, as it turns out the encounter did not take place at all.

Abbotsford Police released details about the alleged incident on Aug. 6, but have since concluded their investigation and revealed Aug. 15 that "this assault did not occur as initially reported and was influenced by a historical traumatic event that occurred in another province. "

Authorities in Abbotsford, and particularly in the 42-year-old woman's Clearbrook neighbourhood, are assuring their is no risk to public safety.

Additionally, police say they "will work with community partners to ensure this victim receives appropriate support."
