BC Ferries reports that a man who went overboard has been retrieved by a rescue boat.

The incident occurred on the Queen of Cowichan's 8:45 a.m. sailing from Horseshoe Bay to Departure Bay and the man went overboard at about 9 a.m. when the vessel was off of Bowen Island.

BC Ferries spokesperson Deborah Marshall says once the crew heard that there was a man overboard they launched one of the rescue boats and brought the man back onboard the ferry.

Marshall says the Canadian Coast Guard was on scene to transfer the man to their hovercraft. The man will be assessed by medical personnel at Horseshoe Bay.

The ship is now on its way to Departure Bay in Nanaimo but will be behind schedule by about an hour.

"I think our crews did a really professional job. They train frequently for different rescue and emergency situations and they showed their skills today," she says.
