Vancouver's Bloedel Conservatory has been closed since mid-March due to COVID-19, but now comes word the city's tropical oasis atop Queen Elizabeth Park is poised to re-open - with new distancing and safety measures in place.

The Vancouver Park Board will re-open the popular venue starting Monday, July 13.

Home to over 120 species of birds and hundreds of plants, Bloedel Conservatory is a tropical oasis beneath an iconic dome that celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2019.

Rather than strolling in on a whim, however, visitors and members will now need to book their 45-minute time slot in advance, and must present their ticket for scanning at their designated entry time. Members are also asked to present their membership card.

Inside the dome, guests will need to keep a minimum of two metres apart from other guests, and a one-way path inside the conservatory has been established.

While the gift shop will remain closed, guests will find the washrooms and high-touch areas of Bloedel on an increased sanitization schedule.

The Park Board has been steadily re-opening venues and outdoor spaces across Vancouver over the past few weeks, such as VanDusen Botanical Garden, golf courses, spray parks, playgrounds, and other outdoor recreation facilities. On July 13, Kitsilano, New Brighton, and Second Beach outdoor pools will open and nine Vancouver beaches will be staffed with lifeguards. Maple Grove Pool will also open this summer, but might be slightly delayed while staff configure the online booking system.
