West Vancouver police say a cyclist is “extremely lucky” to have gotten away with only bumps and bruises after falling into traffic on Lions Gate Bridge Tuesday.

The incident happened just after 9 a.m. when the 29-year-old was riding his bike on the east sidewalk in the 120-metre stretch where there is no physical barrier between bike/pedestrian traffic and the road.

“(He) lost control right at the north end and ended up in the lane of traffic and a vehicle struck the cyclist,” said Const. Kevin Goodmurphy, West Vancouver Police spokesman. “Witnesses stated there wasn’t really time for the driver to react to it so we didn’t find the driver at fault in any way, shape or form.”

The man was taken to hospital but later released. The driver was also left distraught by the incident, Goodmurphy added.

Speed was likely a factor in the crash, Goodmurphy said.
