Family Literacy Week starts this week, encouraging kids to get active

What'll your kid read this week?

Fun with reading can go beyond sitting in a corner with books.

With the rainy, snow weather today, it's likely more than a couple kids spent some time reading.

That's good practice for the upcoming week.

Jan. 24 to 31 is Family Literacy Week in BC. This year the theme is Let's Be Active, which might not sound like it dovetails well to some people.

However, the Vancouver Public Library (VPL) has put together a weeks worth of activities that mesh the two ideas together.

Every morning from Jan. 25–29 they'll be running a Facebook live stream at 10 a.m. with "songs, stories and rhymes," and on Wednesday, Jan. 27 they'll hold a Zoom session from 3:45 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. with an interactive program, feature songs and games (best suited for kids 4 to 8).

An 'Adventure Awaits Pack' with templates and activities has also been created. Local VPL branches will also have some drop-in and take-home activities available, call ahead to find out what's available.

There's also a list of books the VPL suggests for any kids looking to read over the week, and a Facebook group that offers virtual programs during the pandemic.
