At least four people have died in a floatplane crash on uninhabited Addenbroke Island, about 100 kilometres north of Port Hardy.
The Cessna 208 crash happened early Friday afternoon, said navy Lt. Chelsea Dubeau of the Joint Rescue Coordination Centre Victoria.
She said at 2 p.m. that the B.C. Ferries vessel Northern Sea Wolf and a Canadian Coast Guard were on the scene, while a Cormorant helicopter and Buffalo aircraft from 19 Wing Comox were en route.
“Weather, we’re told, was raining with low visibility,” said Dubeau, who couldn't confirm how many individuals were on the aircraft.
A Cessna 208 is capable of carrying 10 to 14 passengers.
Dubeau said it's unclear where the plane was heading or if it was a commercial flight.
She said no one lives on Addenbroke Island, although there is a lighthouse on the island.
The island is on the route the ferry takes from Port Hardy to Prince Rupert.
