The Delta police traffic unit issued violation tickets to what officers described as an ‘insanely reckless’ driver Thursday.

The traffic unit was set up monitoring speeds on the South Fraser Perimeter Road when they observed and stopped a driver excessively speeding at 166 km/hr in an 80 - over double the speed limit.

“Our officers were glad to take this insanely reckless driver off the road today,” said DPD on its Twitter feed. “The driver got a $483 ticket, three points, the car was impounded for seven days, and this will definitely impact their Driver's Risk premium for insurance purposes.”

Traffic unit officers also conducted another weekly advertised enforcement campaign on Scott Road in North Delta.

“One thing is for certain, drivers are still looking at their phones while driving,” said DPD on its Instagram feed. “We do not have the final count for our enforcement, but by noon, our traffic unit had ticketed 16 drivers for using an electronic device.”
Why is it important to put your phone down while driving, asked DPD?

On average 76 people die every year in crashes where distracted driving is a contributing factor.

You’re five times more likely to crash if you’re on your phone.

The penalty for one distracted driving ticket is $368, and four penalty points ($252) for a total of $620.

March is Distracted Driving Awareness month and officers will be conducting a distracted driving campaign to enforce and educate the public.
