Students in Coquitlam are making cards reminding drivers to stay focused on the road as kids head back to school.

From September 5 to September 7, we will be joining up with ICBC and students at schools all over Coquitlam and Port Coquitlam, says Corporal Michael McLaughlin with Coquitlam RCMP. "Our goal is to educate and enforce school zone violations with a particular focus on distracted driving."

"If you’re tired of hearing that message from police officers, perhaps you’ll be more receptive to hand drawn ‘Think of Me’ cards that have been made by the students themselves," McLaughlin says.

'Think of Me' is spearheaded by ICBC and features hand-drawn cards showing the dangers of distracted driving from the perspective of an elementary student.

Studies have shown that drivers who are talking on their cellphone lose 50 per cent of their awareness of what's going on around them, visually.

Drivers are five times more likely to crash if they are on their phones.
