Man shot by police after allegedly chasing another man with a machete

Surrey RCMP report that a man was sent to hospital after being shot by officers who responded to a call that a man was chasing another male with a machete.

Surrey RCMP report that a man was sent to hospital after being shot by officers who responded to a call that a man was chasing another male with a machete.

Officers received a call around 4:17 a.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 14 that a man was chasing another male in an alley in the 10600 block of 135A Street. After they located a man they believed fit the suspect description, police fired their pistols during an altercation with him. The man was then transported to hospital by Emergency Health Services with non-life threatening gunshot injuries.

No one else was injured during the incident.

The area of the incident has been secured, and the Independent Investigation Office of BC (IIO BC) will assume conduct of the investigation into the police involved shooting. The IIO BC reports that the condition of the man who was shot is unknown at this time.

Surrey RCMP Serious Crime investigators are on scene.  Surrey RCMP will continue to investigate the initial complaint and are looking to speak with additional witnesses who have not already spoken to police.  Anyone who has any information is asked to contact the Surrey RCMP at 604-599-0502.
