A man was spotted holding a kitchen knife in a Metro Vancouver SkyTrain car last week.

A source, who wishes to remain anonymous due to safety concerns, tells Vancouver Is Awesome in an email that he saw a man holding the knife on June 4 in SkyTrain car 024 on the Expo Line. He was also holding a golf club. While he says that the man didn't threaten anyone with the knife, he feels that it should have been holstered or inside of his backpack. As such, he used the emergency phone to report the incident to the operator.

The source adds that he got off at Metrotown station, but informed the operator that the individual was still on the car leaving the station.

"It was a regular size kitchen knife about six to seven inches long or longer," he writes. "I had to make sure he didn’t notice me seeing him holding it. He seemed harmless but then you never know."

He says that the individual was with two other people: a man who was lying on the floor and a woman who sitting on a single seat with a medium-sized dog behind it. He adds that "they all seemed sleepy or [out of] it."

Sgt. Clint Hampton, Media Relations Officer for the Metro Vancouver Transit Police, tells V.I.A. in a phone call that it actually isn't illegal to have a knife on SkyTrain. With that being said, he says that people shouldn't carry knives out in the open like the individual in the photograph did. Not only do they appear threatening to other people on the train, but they also carry the potential to injure someone accidentally.

Hampton notes that people should report these kinds of incidents Metro Vancouver Transit Police immediately as situations can rapidly escalate. You can phone 604.515.8300 or Text 87.77.77. In case of an emergency, always dial 9-1-1.
