North Shore Rescue got a roaring start to the roaring ‘20s with three callouts on New Year’s Day.
The team deployed a helicopter and swift water rescue team after receiving a report of a distressed woman in Lynn Creek. It turned out to be a false alarm but as they were searching, they came across a kayaker very much in need of some help, said Mike Danks, North Shore Rescue team leader.
“He got into water that he wasn’t comfortable with. He was out of his kayak at the side of the river and he wasn’t able to get out of the canyon because it was too deep. It was kind of perfect timing,” Danks said.
From there, it was a straightforward rescue, Danks said.
As they were getting dried off, the third call of the day came in from two hikers who were lost on Dog Mountain.
They turned out to be at North Shore Rescue’s team cabin. Mt. Seymour Ski Patrol members helped out and made it to the site to make sure everything was OK. North Shore Rescue members hiked the couple back out.
Despite having more rain than snow in the mountains recently, most of the rescues the team has conducted have been for people who aren’t prepared for winter conditions, Danks said.
