North Shore rescuers team up to save stranded dog and injured owner on Dog Mountain

Both parties airlifted out after owner injures shoulder trying to save stranded pooch

District of North Vancouver Fire and Rescue Services and North Shore Rescue joined forces Tuesday morning to save a pooch in peril and his master.

They received the yelp for help around 10:30 a.m. from Dog Mountain on Mount Seymour.

“A dog had found its way down an embankment and the owners were trying to get it up. The gentleman ended up hurting his shoulder so they ended up calling 911 for assistance,” said assistant fire chief Jeremy Duncan. “It was fairly steep. They had to use ropes to haul the owner and the dog out. It was probably about 80 feet down.”

Because of their location and the snowy conditions, they called North Shore Rescue for an assist. They were able to call in a helicopter to help airlift the subjects to the Bone Creek search and rescue station, where an ambulance was waiting.

Duncan said it was teamwork at its finest.

“They worked seamlessly together, and it was awesome,” he said.

It’s not the only time this week first responders have been called to deal with a dog in danger. On Monday night, West Vancouver Fire and Rescue scrambled to save an 85-pound Rottweiler, named Boss, after it fell into Cypress Falls Creek.
