A man has been killed during a daytime shooting at Vancouver International Airport in Richmond on Sunday afternoon.

According to eyewitnesses, shots were fired outside YVR's main terminal, near the international departures area, around 3 p.m.

Sgt. Frank Jang, the spokesperson for B.C.'s Integrated Homicide Investigation Team (IHIT), said the victim was 28 years old and was known to police.

Shortly after the incident, a burned-out vehicle, similar to the one fleeing Richmond, was found in Surrey.

The Richmond RCMP said officers were called to YVR and "intercepted (a) getaway vehicle," but were shot at by the suspects at the intersection of No. 3 Road and Sea Island Way. No officers were hurt.

The Provincial Health Services Authority (PHSA) told the Richmond News that a call was received around 3 p.m. about an incident at the airport.

Bike paramedics at the airport, two ground units and a paramedic supervisor responded to the incident, but no one was transported to the hospital, according to Jane Campbell, with PHSA.

A video was posted on social media which the poster claims was taken moments after an apparent shooting. The short clip, recorded at a distance, showed an individual on the ground, bullet casings nearby and an RCMP officer just outside the airport.

Meanwhile, YVR said in a statement that the airport is open and safe for workers and those who need to need to travel.

"Our thoughts are with those impacted by today's incident," read the statement.

"The safety and security of our employees, community and passengers remain our priority and we are fully cooperating with the RCMP to support the investigation."

Routes including the Massey Tunnel, Arthur Laing, Oak, Alex Fraser, Queensborough and Knight St. bridges were closed off, but have since been re-opened. Canada Line service to YVR airport has also resumed.

The incident caused major traffic delays in several areas of the city including Highway 99, Highway 91 and the Massey Tunnel.
